Review Text

  • By Samuel J. Gantt III on May 12, 2010

This book, which has been replaced with a more updated title, The Rape of Man and Nature, along with Philip Sherrard's other writings on the true sacramental nature of our humanity, expressed in his excellent book, Human Image: World Image, should be required reading for all who want to be able to articulate what we Orthodox Christians believe reality to be. This particular book contrasts the way the Cappadocian Fathers viewed reality with the tragic eclipse, or rape, of our true human fulfillment, the goal of which is total communion with our Creator God, the Father, through His Incarnate and risen Son, Jesus Christ, by the power of God the Holy Spirit. This sets the stage for what we might call "Sacramental Reality." This is an impassioned and learned analysis of the roots of the modern destructive attitude to the environment and the nature of man in a misguided Christian theology stemming largely from St. Augustine and his crypto-Manichean attitude to the human condition. The author points to the logos-theology of the Eastern Church, and the much more positive view of man's relation with Christ as the key to setting us right with ourselves and the world. Very stimulating and thought-provoking.

A systematic and practical embrace of Eastern Orthodoxy that is written for Western Christian ears.
