I bought this as a companion to the blu-ray release of the William Gillette silent film which has recently been released and was filmed in 1916. Like most silent films the text on screen is sparse in relation to the action going on in the film. So I wanted to know what the actors were actually saying. While the movie and the script of the play do not follow the same chronological path, the script gives you an idea of what the actors are saying in various scenes. The first draft of this play was written by Arthur Conan Doyle and then William Gillette, who also stars as Sherlock Holmes in the film, reworked it in a transatlantic collaboration with Doyle. It was Gillette who asked Doyle if Sherlock could fall in love and get married and Doyle had no problem with that. As a play in New York it was a hit, and most of the actors in the film are the original actors from the play. The only major exception is that in the play Charlie Chaplin played the page boy. Unfortunately by the time they filmed it he was too old for the role. The actors are saying the words from the script in the film. The blu-ray version of the film does have an accompanying dvd that has the script but I found it more convenient to have this in front of me. A second version of this script was done with some embellishment by John Barrymore in 1922 and is also available on dvd. It has the advantage of having a very young William Powell in a fairly good role. The 1922 one also has a better text so that you can follow the story. Fans of Sherlock will recognize parts of the plot as coming from various stories written by Conan Doyle, mostly A Scandal in Bohemia and it is fun to think that Doyle probably watched this film himself.
