Apologies - memory fading on this read of a couple of weeks ago. This was the second of Feis' books that I've read, and it too is very good. ALOT of detail along the timeline - too much for my purposes. Nothing unconventional - FDR's belief in the efficacy of personal diplomacy is faithfully related. The nature of conversations with the Soviets during summer/fall of 1941 are very instructive - the Soviets never doubted their eventual victory - well before the Germans were stopped before Moscow the Soviets were dickering with the Allies for the spoils after victory. There are also lessons about the limits of words in diplomacy - whether you fight ambiguity or not when you're dealing with a partner who does not share good faith let alone your exact ideals you're gonna have a hard time. It took a Hitler to (briefly) unify the west and east. A cold war, at a minimum, afterward was inevitable. The Atlantic Charter was something good and right that unfortunately not all of the signatories could live up to.
